I have just finished my orientation sessions for the day. No it’s not 6:30, the corporate EOD timeline but 9 pm in the night...The time table for tomorrow reads “Business Exercise” for the entire day. Oh my god another 9 to 9 workday…I am going to go crazy...but just then a senior yells out, tomorrow is a day where you will have a life time kind of an experience. ..I could just imprint a vivid set of tortures I would have to undergo tomorrow.
22 hours later I am sitting relaxed in a cyber cafe in FC road….Writing what you are reading now, and when I look back at the day’s event, it has truly been an experience which I will remember for many days to come….
Let’s rewind and take you through this “Adventurous trip”, as I would coin it. Professor Manoher Kamath, a visiting faculty associated with SIMS for the last 9 years explained the whole procedure. We had to reach Camp area …ahh a twist there, without using your vehicles and not using public transport…and then we have to somehow earn a minimum of 150 bucks for the entire day without spending a penny. It seemed as an impossible task at the beginning, but we were happy at least we would be out off the campus.
We were clubbed together with a partner of an opposite gender (another motivation)
And then let loose outside the campus gates…After 3 lifts…two with people working in IT industry, Smiti and I (my buddy in this trip) managed to reach MG road.
The harder part was to follow. How were we supposed to ask for jobs? It’s going to be really embarrassing. Smiti had other ideas. She went inside a laptop store (after me cheering for her from behind) and asked for a job, but who gets success in the first go?
After a few blunt NO’s and excuses like “I have no problem but my staff won’t like it”, we reached a decently sized shop called Rajdhani Exhibition. I was looking to go ahead when Smiti said “Let’s try this one”. I was a little doubtful. It looked like a very meticulously arranged shop with all kind of apparels, ornamental accessories and household items. Why would they want us, we know nothing about Curtains and shoes. To our surprise they instantly said “Yes”. They were arranging the shop so they could use some help. Gladly we entered and started helping in arranging stuff.
The customers were less in the morning so we had a relatively free time to talk to the shop owner and staff member. After a short training session, we were given our sections to handle. I was given the responsibility of the earrings and bangles section. Gladly I stood there waiting for the ladies to arrive. After a couple of hours I had sold earrings to Tibetienese women , some young girls and an old lady who took half an hour to decide what she wanted.
Time flew by and it was already 5:30pm. We had to report at 6:00 pm to Magnum mall. Bidding goodbye to staff members and receiving our pay which came out to be 200 bucks we started for the mall. Hmmm . .. I felt satisfied…I had done something substantial and interesting at the same point of time…The thing which I was lacking in my work at Infosys before coming to SIMS…At the mall , our seniors had another shock in store for us. We were asked to pen down our thoughts in the form of a blog and present the next morning.
And now we come back to the present …I am sitting, writing this blog trying to again relive this exciting day.
